Should I Do IVF or Keep Trying Naturally?

Fertility Coach Crystal Breaks It Down

If you’re staring down the barrel of your fertility journey wondering,

“Should I keep trying naturally or is it time for IVF?”

Let me just say this: You’re not alone and this question doesn’t have a one-size-fits-all answer.

But let’s be honest no one gives you a real roadmap here. It’s either “just relax and keep trying” or “IVF is your only shot.”

And maybe your doctor casually mentioned IVF like it’s no big deal…
Or maybe you’ve found yourself face-to-face with what I like to call “The IVF Doctor Pushers.”

You know the ones, IVF is their answer to everything, no matter what your fertility diagnosis, labs, lifestyle, or gut are saying.

Meanwhile, you’re stuck Googling in the dark at 2 a.m., wondering if you’re wasting time, money, eggs or all three.

Let’s cut through the noise. Here’s what I walk my Fertility Flow clients through to figure out what’s actually right for them.

Trying Naturally vs. IVF: How to Decide What’s Right for You

How do decide to keep trying or move forward with IVF?

1. How long have you been trying and are you actually timing things right?

If you’ve been trying for a year (or 6 months if you're over 35), most fertility doctors say it’s time for testing. But here’s the twist: if your cycles are irregular, or you’re not ovulating, if your hormones are out of whack, you might not have really been “trying” the whole time.

Fertility Pro Tip: Before jumping to IVF, we need to make sure you’re actually ovulating, your luteal phase is long enough, and that you’re not missing your window due to hormone chaos. (Yes, even if your cycles look regular.)

2. What does your current fertility testing show and what hasn’t been tested?
Many people are told “everything looks fine” when…it’s not.

A basic fertility workup often misses:

  • Nutrient deficiencies

  • Underlying inflammation

  • Thyroid dysfunction

  • Egg and sperm quality issues

  • Autoimmune markers

  • Gut or microbiome imbalances

IVF can’t fix what hasn’t been identified.
You don’t want to throw $20k at a process that fails because of an undiagnosed root issue or given the diagnosis of unexplained infertility.
This is where a holistic, strategic fertility coach (hi, it’s me 👋) changes the fertility game entirely.

3. What’s your AMH, age, and ovarian reserve story?
Low AMH doesn’t mean IVF is your only path.
And yes, egg quality can improve with certain protocols.
But yes, time and age are big factors, we need a personalized fertility plan that makes sense for you and the family you want.

IVF isn’t a Plan B. It’s a tool. But tools only work if your body is ready to use them.

4. What’s your emotional and financial bandwidth?
Let’s be real, IVF isn’t just a medical decision.
It’s a financial, emotional, and logistical one.

If your nervous system is fried, your relationship feels strained, or you’re already running on empty…IVF might not be the first step, even if it’s still a step you’ll take later.

You are not a fertility robot.
You’re a whole human trying to grow another human with another whole human. That deserves respect and strategy.
